Difficile ! Il neigeait tous les jours et je ne connaissais personne.
Hard! It was snowing every day and I did not know anyone.
Ami
Qu'est-ce que tu as fait pour rencontrer des gens ?
What did you do to meet people?
Katia
Un matin, pendant que j'attendais l'autobus, j'ai parlé à une voisine.
One morning, while I was waiting for the bus, I spoke to a neighbour.
Ami
Et ensuite ?
And then?
Katia
Elle m'a invitée à un club de conversation. Depuis, j'y vais chaque mardi.
She invited me to a conversation club. Since then, I go there every Tuesday.
Ami
Tu vois, tout a changé grâce à une conversation.
You see, everything changed thanks to one conversation.
Katia
Exactement. Avant, j'avais peur de parler ; maintenant, j'ose.
Exactly. Before, I was afraid to speak; now, I dare.

Grammar in context
Imparfait = background, passé composé = event
The imparfait paints the scene (weather, feelings, habits). The passé composé moves the story forward.
- Il neigeait quand je suis arrivée. — It was snowing when I arrived.
- Je travaillais souvent le soir. — I often used to work in the evening.
Forming the imparfait
Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Only être is irregular (j'étais).
- nous parlons → je parlais — we speak → I used to speak
- nous finissons → il finissait — we finish → he used to finish
