Grammar in context
Il y a — the workhorse of description
Use il y a for anything that exists in a place, singular or plural. The negative is il n'y a pas de.
- Il y a une laveuse au sous-sol. — There is a washer in the basement.
- Il n'y a pas de balcon. — There is no balcony.
Numbers and money
Prices are said as plain numbers plus dollars. Learn the tens: vingt, trente, quarante, cinquante, soixante, soixante-dix, quatre-vingts, quatre-vingt-dix, cent, mille.
- Mille deux cents dollars par mois. — Twelve hundred dollars a month.
- Le dépôt est de cinq cents dollars. — The deposit is five hundred dollars.
